What Are Eligible Smelters in the RMI?

Overview
In the framework of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), an Eligible Smelter refers to a facility that meets the criteria to undergo an audit through the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) but has not yet started the assessment.

RMI recognizes these facilities as potential candidates for future participation in the program, which promotes ethical sourcing of minerals such as tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold (3TG).

What Makes a Smelter “Eligible”?

A smelter or refiner is considered eligible if it:

  • Is known to process or refine 3TG minerals.
  • Has been identified through industry research or supply chain disclosures.
  • Meets RMI’s baseline criteria for inclusion in the RMAP program.

However, eligible smelters are not yet active in the RMAP process and have not committed to an audit or submitted documentation.

Why Is This Important?

Understanding the status of eligible smelters helps companies:

  • Monitor potential future participants in responsible sourcing programs.
  • Identify gaps in their supply chain due diligence.
  • Encourage suppliers to engage with RMI and begin the RMAP process.

🏁 Facility Status Comparison

Status Description
Conformant Facility has completed the RMAP audit and meets all standards.
Active Facility is currently undergoing the RMAP process.
Eligible Facility meets criteria to be assessed but has not yet started the process.

📄 Where Can I Find the List?

The Eligible Smelters List is available on the RMI website. It is updated periodically and includes facility names, locations, and mineral types processed.
