What information is required to list a company as a smelter in the register?
A user inquired about the process for getting their company listed as a smelter in the CMRT and EMRT forms, indicating that they are currently not included in the existing register.

This article explains the information and documentation required for a company to be evaluated and listed as a smelter or refiner in the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) Smelter Reference List. Providing complete and accurate information enables RMI to determine whether a facility meets the definition of a smelter/refiner and can be assigned an RMI Smelter ID.

RBA Online Registration and CIQ Submission Process
Once registration is initiated, the following information will be required for RMI to evaluate the facility.
1. Company Identification Information
To begin the review, the facility must provide complete company‑level details, including:
Required Details
- Full legal company name
- Facility name (if different from corporate name)
- Complete facility address (street/building number, city, province/state, country)
- Corporate headquarters address (if applicable)
- Official company website
- Primary contact name
- Contact email address
- Contact phone number
This information allows RMI to verify the facility’s identity, operational location, and corporate structure.
2. Production Information
To determine whether the company performs smelting or refining operations, the facility must provide detailed production data.
Required Details
- Products manufactured (e.g., tin ingots, gold bullion, tantalum powder, nickel matte, cobalt hydroxide)
- Feedstock/input materials (e.g., ore, concentrates, intermediates, scrap, recycled materials)
- Output forms (e.g., ingots, wire, powder, sponge, salts)
- Annual production capacity (if available)
This information helps RMI distinguish true smelters/refiners from traders, distributors, or downstream manufacturers.
3. Description of Processing Activities
RMI must confirm whether the facility performs metallurgical transformation processes.
Required Details
- Description of processing steps performed onsite
- Confirmation of whether the facility conducts:
- Primary smelting
- Secondary smelting
- Refining
- Hydrometallurgical/chemical processing
- Electro‑winning or electro‑refining
- Pyrometallurgical/thermal reduction
- Statement confirming whether raw materials are physically transformed into metal at the facility
This information is essential in determining whether the facility meets RMI’s smelter/refiner definition.
4. Evidence That Smelting/Refining Takes Place
To validate operational status and production activity, RMI may request supporting documentation.
Acceptable Documentation
- Photos of production lines, furnaces, or processing equipment
- Flowcharts of metallurgical processes
- Environmental or operational permits referencing smelting/refining
- ISO certificates with the scope of metallurgical activities
- Government or industry registrations referencing metal production
These materials confirm the facility is performing transformation processes rather than non‑transformative activities.
5. Ownership and Corporate Structure
RMI may also require details regarding:
- Company ownership (private, state‑owned, subsidiary)
- Parent or affiliated companies
- Business registration numbers
- Corporate entity type (LLC, Ltd, Corp, etc.)
Providing accurate ownership and registration details helps prevent duplicate entries and ensures accurate assignment of the Smelter ID.
6. Minerals Processed
The facility must specify the mineral(s) it processes. Examples include:
- Tin (Sn)
- Tantalum (Ta)
- Tungsten (W)
- Gold (Au)
- Cobalt (Co)
- Mica
- Nickel (Ni)
- Copper (Cu)
- Lithium
- Other RMI‑recognized minerals
Each mineral stream may require separate review, depending on the processing method and production chain.
7. Supply Chain Information (Optional but Helpful)
While not mandatory for initial listing, providing this information can expedite evaluation:
- Description of raw material sources (e.g., mine, trader, recycler)
- Feedstock procurement pathways
- Participation in any external ESG or compliance audits, such as:
- RMAP audits
- Third‑party ESG audits
- Local regulator inspections
This helps RMI understand the facility’s position in the broader supply chain.
8. Confirmation of Operational Status
Facilities must provide an accurate operational status, including:
- Whether operations are active, inactive, or permanently closed
- Whether processing lines for the mineral are currently running
- Whether any temporary shutdowns exist (e.g., maintenance, equipment upgrades, permit renewals)
Operational transparency ensures accuracy within the Smelter Reference List.
9. RMI Review and Assignment of Smelter ID
Once all required information is submitted:
- RMI reviews the information for completeness and accuracy.
- A determination is made regarding whether the facility meets the smelter/refiner definition.
- If approved:
- An RMI Smelter ID is issued.
- The facility is added to the RMI Smelter Reference List.
- If additional information is required:
- RMI will contact the submitter for clarification or supporting documents.
