How to Find Unsanctioned Smelters

This article outlines a detailed process for identifying unsanctioned and unregulated smelters, including definitions, access requirements, and step-by-step instructions. It is designed to assist users in navigating the RMI platform effectively.

Definitions

Smelter: A smelter is a specialized facility or factory designed for extracting metal from its ore. This process involves heating the ore to high temperatures until it melts, allowing the metal to separate from the impurities contained within the ore. The smelting process not only facilitates the extraction of various metals, such as copper, lead, and zinc, but also plays a critical role in producing alloys and other metal-based products essential in numerous industries. The operation of a smelter typically requires advanced technology and equipment to ensure efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

Unsanctioned Smelter: An unsanctioned smelter is defined as a facility that has been officially removed from the RMI conformant list. This removal typically occurs due to the facility's failure to comply with established regulations, including environmental standards, labor rights, or ethical sourcing requirements. Additionally, a smelter may be classified as unsanctioned if it has been identified as violating specific sanctions, either due to its connections with prohibited entities or its operations in regions under international trade restrictions. The designation of being unsanctioned not only signifies non-compliance but also poses significant risks for companies relying on such facilities in their supply chains, as engaging with them may lead to reputational damage and legal repercussions.

Access to Smelter Lists
The lists of sanctioned and unsanctioned smelters are currently available only to RMI members. Membership provides access to comprehensive data and tools necessary for responsible minerals sourcing. If you are not yet a member, consider joining the RMI program to gain access to these valuable resources.

Status Change of Smelters
The RMI will change a smelter's status from conformant to "RMI Due Diligence Review—Unable to Proceed" if it is discovered that it is subject to sanctions.

Steps to Obtain the List of Unsanctioned Smelters

1. Log in to the Facility Database by heading to https://c0eku224.caspio.com/ui/apps and by entering your username, which is your email address and the password previously configured onto the platform.

2. Run a search for eligible smelters. This step helps identify smelters currently under review or having been assessed.

3. Filter results to obtain smelters with the following statuses:
- Non-conformant
- RMI Due Diligence Review

Filtering ensures you focus on smelters that are either non-compliant or under due diligence review due to potential sanctions.
